The Short Answer

Testosterone testing is worth it if you have symptoms (fatigue, low libido, loss of muscle mass, erectile dysfunction) OR specific risk factors (obesity, type 2 diabetes, chronic opioid use). It's not worth it for men without symptoms hoping for a magic energy boost. The case for testosterone testing depends on symptoms and context. Research shows 20-40% of men over 45 have testosterone deficiency, but low-T clinics have oversold the hormone as a cure-all. Here's when testing provides real value: If you're a man over 40 with fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction, or unexplained muscle loss, testosterone testing can identify a treatable cause. If you're an athlete experiencing performance decline despite training, it rules out hormonal issues. If you're a woman with PCOS, hirsutism, or irregular cycles, testosterone helps diagnose androgen excess. What testing WON'T do: give you energy if you're just stressed and sleep-deprived, replace the need for exercise and nutrition, or magically reverse aging. Discuss your symptoms with your health practitioner to determine if testosterone testing is appropriate.
